I watch Pretty Little Liars, and I love it! Here, I said it. To me, Rosewood is sort of like the Upper East Side (Gossip Girl’s, that is) minus all the wealth and plus all the murders. A place I go to enjoy pure entertainment, channel my inner Jessica Fletcher trying to guess who the fuck is A -right now I’m more confused than ever- and forget the unlikeliness that all those secrets, gory murders and downright awful parents (I love Ella, Ashley, Virginia and Pam but how come none of them realized their daughters were and still are bullied by a psychopath?). Besides, so many murders in a town as tiny as Cabot Cove also was unlikely and I still look up to J. B. Fletcher when it comes to sleuthing and happily watch reruns! So far, PPL hasn’t screwed up the way GG did mid-season 4 and all season 5. And I love Blake Lively, she was last year’s March Girl Crush and I think she has a lot of potential as an actress, but Gossip Girl didn’t always showcase it (looking at you awful season 5). And God knows how much I loved S. I think it is different with Pretty Little Liars. And as I watched the second half of the season this month (I was too busy before), I realized how talented Troian Bellisario is and how wide the range of her acting is.

I don’t know much of her really. And I don’t know much of her acting besides PPL. I only vaguely remember she played McGee’s sister Sarah on NCIS (her dad’s show); and learned very recently that she thus actually was Sean Murray’s (half-)sister. But as Spencer Hastings, she is quite fine and she amazes me! I thought she played her character’s meltdown very well and with a surprising but welcome subtlety. And it’s not easy, playing a meltdown: over-the-top will antagonize the audience that will only see the exaggeration. She hit the all right notes to me and it made me more invested in her character than ever. I can’t wait to see what the June season 4 premiere will reserve and I look forward to see her in a feature film. I can tell she has a great career ahead of her. I’ll wait trying to find a way to watch her many, many shorts and with my guilty pleasure that Pretty Little Liars is.

Also, if I may add, I think she’s very beautiful. She has what people often describe as “aristocratic” features, enhanced by the mystery of her gorgeous name! Troian Bellisario: it’s basically music to your ears.

Kat Dennings joined the list of my future wives. This list currently consist of Cate Blanchett (who has yet to make my girl crush list), Lizzy Caplan (who made it in October and currently holds the Ultimate Girl Crush title) and Kat Dennings. There are tons of reasons for that.

I love her as hot as Hell, sarcastic Max on 2 Broke Girls. I love her as Norah in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. I love her as Kat in Defendor. I love her as Caroline in Daydream Nation. I remember loving her as bratty sex-crazed tween on Sex and The City (the episode where Miranda wear braces) and I recently re-watched one of my favorite Without a Trace episode (Our Sons and Daughters, [S2E06]), only realizing she was in it. See where I’m going? I’ve seen her in most of the films she’s been in and I’m under her charm every time. I really started noticing her when I first saw her in Nick and Norah, this film is a gem and Kat and Michael Cera are just wonderful as the title characters: you can relate to them in a way you rarely can with romantic leads. And somehow, you can relate to all the characters she plays, no matter how different they are. And they could not be more different. Norah is a shy teenager who shares a passion with “musical soulmate” Nick. Kat Debrofkowitz is a young crack-addict prostitute who takes a liking in Arthur, a troubled vigilante in Defendor. Susan is the daughter of heavy-drinking school principal Robert Downey, Jr. who falls for new student Charlie Bartlett. Caroline Wexler is the bold and sexy new student who seduces a classmate and her teacher in Daydream Nation. Like I said, those characters have only one thing in common: they have the extremely talented and beautiful Kat portraying them. So obviously, I love Kat as an actress , she is gifted and makes you care for her characters and makes you find a way to relate to them even if you’re their polar opposite. She gives them heart.

Because she has heart, and a lot of it. And that’s why I’m so infatuated with her. I love her characters, but I love Kat even better. Especially, because she’s real. And you can feel it, it’s no pretend. I’ve been reading her blog and watching her videos for years. I almost forgot about it until 2 Broke Girls came on our screens and she revived my old flame as sassy Max. She’s maybe the one  of my wives who’s the most like me. She’s a voracious reader and a self-proclaimed nerd. She sometimes goes out in sweatpants and doesn’t give a fuck. And she loves red lipstick.

She is funny, she is smart, she is talented and she’s cool (so cool Kobe Bryant tells her how much he loves her show while on the basketball court and with the ball!). I love her for all of those things. And I don’t need to tell you how incomparably gorgeous and incredibly sexy she is, do I? I think she makes it pretty obvious by only appearing. Now: how do I get her to say yes?

I think I’ve admired and possibly had crush on Rashida Jones since the early 2000’s -do you realize how far the “early 2000’s” already are? I had bought Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones for my dad and I think I ended up reading it before he did; and there is only one picture with Rashida on it, and it’s a group picture, but I remember thinking she was the most beautiful of all his daughters and all his daughters are beautiful. I also hoped I’d be as gorgeous. I had reasonable hope for that given how my dad basically was a younger Quincy Jones. Not only did he look like him, he also was in the music industry and the only notable difference between the two was that, despite my sister’s and my efforts to convince him to do so, my dad never had his ear pierced.

Flash-forward to now and spoiler alert: I look nothing like Rashida Jones (bummer!) but we still have something in common (other than our alike-looking dads): we’re writers. I mean she is a writer (credits include co-writing Celeste and Jesse Forever and coming up with some hilarious tweets), I’m just a hopeful one, but I write and she’s 12 years ahead of me so I guess it balances out. And also, if I don’t fuck up at Brown next year, we’ll both be Ivy League graduates (She graduated from Harvard).

Anyway, here we are, in the early 2010’s and I still admire and definitely have a (growing) crush on the recent birthday girl (Rashida turned 37 two days ago). I love her as beautiful tropical fish Ann Perkins on Parks and Rec and I really was enthused by her performance as Celeste in Celeste and Jesse Forever, which is a remarkable little film everyone should see (side effects: increases love for Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg). Rashida is this brilliant actress, this very smart woman, this super funny chick, this incredibly gorgeous human being, but she also seems to be the sweetest and nicest girl you could ever meet. No wonder why people propose to her out of the blue. I think if I’d met her, I’d tell her straight: “I love you, woman!” -hoping she’d get it!!!

But mostly, I hope I’ll make my dad as proud as hers undoubtedly is.

My January Girl Crush could be no other than Jodie Foster. For multiple reasons. The first being Jodie Foster is a tremendously skillful actress. I’ve seen her in so many different films, melting into so many characters with the (only) apparent ease that is the sign of great thespians. She was a preteen prostitute in Taxi Driver, a single mother to a very intelligent boy in Little Man Tate, a gambler with a tell in Maverick, Clarice Sterling in The Silence of the Lamb, a rape survivor in The Accused to name a few. There is not one single performance of hers that hasn’t touched me. I think, one of her strength as an actor is her sensitivity that makes all of her characters so genuine. Two other accomplishments of hers include directing my favorite Thanksgiving movie: Home for The Holidays, and being fluent in French!

But besides being an admirable actress, she is an admirable woman. She is authentic at the core and she has always been, as far of the public eye as she could. In her heartfelt speech while accepting her Cecil B. DeMille award, the most important thing to me wasn’t that she publicly said for the first time that she is a lesbian. The most important thing to me was her plea defending the right to privacy. It’s something that people tend to forget, with their over-exposition nowadays, but actors are people. Their job make them recognizable to us, it doesn’t give us a right to scrutinize their every move. But sadly we do, more and more; and for that I blame trashy wannabe starlets who don’t have half of the talent Jodie has but avidly seek fame and publicity. And Jodie certainly knows what she is talking about, she who began acting in commercials at age 3 and had to leave Yale where she was a brilliant student when, in 1981 John Hinckley Jr. shot President Reagan “to impress her”. She unwittingly received unwanted attention from journalists after this. But she sought normalcy and managed to live her life out of the public eye, raising two (adorable) kids with her partner (who happens to be a woman). I admire her for that, for her humility, her courage and her earnestness. She is also a loyal friend and that’s very remarkable too in Hollywood where interest often overpowers fidelity. Jodie Foster is a beautiful woman, a beautiful person. And she’s single!
